Death toll in Mumbai spurious liquor traqgedy rises to 84
Mumbai, June 20 (ANI): The death toll after consuming spurious liquor rose to 84 in Mumbai on Saturday.
Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP), Fateh Singh, said several others continue to be admitted in the hospitals, battling for their lives.
"So far, 84 people, across hospitals, have been killed in this case while 40 people have been admitted in hospitals," said Singh.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had ordered an enquiry into the matter soon after the case came to light.
Reportedly, eight police officials have been suspended for 'negligent approach while discharging their duty' for not being able to check the production of spurious liquor and the case is being looked into by the crime branch.
Meanwhile, the Congress workers took to streets and protested outside the Malvani police station to condemn police inaction.
Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said suspending junior police officials in the case is not sufficient.
"Illegal breweries of country made liquor in Mumbai were shut down in 1984 when people had died due to spurious liquor in Vickhroli. Firstly, I would like to know that on whose orders and for how long have these breweries starting re-operating in Mumbai. This aspect needs to be looked into," said Nirupam.
According to reports, five people have been remanded to police custody till June 26 in connection with this case. (ANI)
