After Bangalore it’s Gurgaon: N_E syudents brutally assaulted
NEW DELHI: Close on the heels of a vicious attack on three Manipuri students in Bangalore who were thrashed for their inability to speak Kannada, two more young men from Nagaland were mercilessly beaten up in Gurgaon on Thursday.
Reports suggest that a gang of seven goons brutally assaulted the two boys with bats and rods, in what appears to be a clear case of racism.
The victims sustained severe injuries and have been admitted to Gurgaon Civil Hospital for treatment.
Times Now showed one of the victims as recounting that the attackers asked them to tell “North-East people to leave Sikanderpur (in Gurgaon)".
Meanwhile, the police have said that this is not a case of racist attack but just a scuffle between two groups of men.
The victim, however, said that the attackers constantly kept saying that people from the North East should go back or will be killed. The goons also tonsured one of the two boys. INB Live reported quoted one of the victims as saying: "They shaved my head. They said everyone from the North-East must go back. Are people from the Northeast not Indians?”
In Wednesday’s attack in Bangalore, too, the culprits told the students, “This is India, not China. If you can eat food in Karnataka, then you must be able to speak Kannada."
The victims were living in a rented place in Gurgaon’s Sikanderpur area where many students from the North-East and Africa reside.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed concern over the brutal attacks on students from the North-East, both in Bangalore and Gurgaon, and said he will take up the issue with the Karnataka and Haryana governments.
He said that that strict action must be taken against the culprits and demanded a report from the state governments on the two incidents.
Quoting the home minister, a media report said: "I will talk to the authorities in Karnataka and Haryana. Action should be taken. No one can discriminate against anyone on the basis of caste, creed and sect."
