AMRITSAR SAHIB (March 17, 2014)—Assailants mercilessly assaulted an innocent baptised Sikh named Jasmeet Singh on Friday. They dishonoured his religious symbols such as his hair as well as his turban at Hall gate locality and left the feelings of Sikhs around the world injured deeply.
As per information available to Sikh24.com, the incident took place when a Dalit organization sat on dharna (protest) in demand of setting up a Ram Teerth temple. Jasmeet Singh was biking to his shop which was situated near Bhandari Bridge and he requested the demonstrators to let him go to his shop. They began to beat him without reason. In their brutal attack, his turban was ripped off with fists and his hair was pulled badly, thereby committing a blasphemous and violent act.
Ironically, Police remained mute spectator shamefully on the spot and no policeman come forward to rescue him.
Sikh organizations have strongly condemned the brutal act and demanded rigid action against the assailants. Dal Khalsa has sought a criminal case and strict action against the attackers for committing blasphemy. Kanwar Pal Singh, spokesman of the organization, said that those policemen who remained mute spectator should face strict departmental action. He said the Akali government and administration should be ashamed of it. He termed the incident disturbing and intolerable.
Meanwhile, in view of the tense situation created, Amritsar Police has reportedly charged more than a half dozen persons. After the video of the incident came out, Police identified the attackers and arrested one of them. SHO Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa has said that the attackers have been charged on the basis of a statement by the victim.
