NEW DELHI—Accepting the petition seeking cancellation of political recognition of Shiromani Akali Dal, the Delhi High Court has said that the matter was worth consideration. It is notable here that the petitioner had claimed in the petition that the Shiromani Akali Dal couldn’t be given permission to contest Parliament and Rajya Sabha elections as the latter was not a secular party.
The Delhi High Court has asked the petitioner to lodge answers to these three questions:
- As the matter is concerned with Parliament, Can the High Court intervene in the matter?
- What provisions does the Election Commission have to cancel recognition of a Political party?
- Does the Shiromani Akali Dal hide any information while taking recognition?
The court has deferred the next hearing on the case to May 24.
The petition was filed against the Shiromani Akali Dal by activist B.S, Khaira. Khaira alleged that being a “religious organization”, Shiromani Akali Dal couldn’t have been registered as a political party in Delhi.
