Australian Magazine Ridicules the Sikh Community
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA (February 1, 2013)–A pornographic magazine titled “The Picture” which is published from Sydney, Australia, has insulted the Sikh community by printing a photo of a Nihang Singh and making derogatory comments about his turban. The magazine published an article in its January 30 publication titled “Turban Legend”. On the front page the magazine, a Nihung Singh is pictured along with other nude and pornographic pictures. In the main article, the Nihang Singh is referred to as “crocodile”, which is actually the meaning of the word “Nihang” in Persian. However, along with this, the author has ridiculed the Singh’s turban as “useless” and used other derogatory terms.
The author states that while many people find it difficult to wear ties with suits, Nihangs wear 300 meters and 3.5 kg turbans. The author tries to demote the turban’s importance by stating that it could result in in neck and back pain
The matter has been brought to the attention of the SGPC by Sikhs in Australia. SGPC has been requested to take up the matter legally against the publishers for insulting the Sikh Community by using cheap and foul words when referring to Sikhs. Team of the United Sikhs in New York has also taken up the matter with Australian Human Rights.
